Convert PDF file to InDesign with Markzware’s InDesign plugin to edit PDF. Pages to InDesign Converter Hi, everybody. David Dilling from Markzware. In this demonstration, we’re going to show you how we can get an Apple Pages document into InDesign, using PDF as the medium and PDF2DTP as the tool or converter to help make this happen. This is a bitmap image format that was created by the MacPaint graphics program used on Apple Macintosh computers. The MAC format supported the display of only two colors, including a pattern palette. It was used by Macintosh graphics editors to store black-and-white graphics. The maximum image size was 576×720.

I have a lot of documents authored with Apple’s Pages. I wanted to convert these to markdown texts with the images (mostly screen grabs). The Pages file format is a proprietary format, and so we are dependent on the limited export features that the program itself provides. So how can we do this?

Apple pages

I think pages is a very nice word processor and I have been using for some time to build documents for my students, to either print out or convert to PDF for delivery on our Moodle pages.

But I don’t want to print this type of material anymore. Beside, I need to update every year. Making version changes needs to happen more frequently, these documents really need to be delivered as web pages. Editing (and creating new pages) is better done with a markdown text editor.

The workflow

Pages is good at giving you options for export. You can export to PDF, Word, Plain text and ePub. But, you can’t export to HTML or markdown.

The challenge then was to take the Pages document and recreate as markdown for use here on this site, so the pages can be easily maintained.

Pandoc to the rescue

I just love this Pandoc. Thanks to John Macfarlane, a Professor of Philosophy at the University of California, we can convert just about any document format to any other with this universal document converter.

You can read the details here.

Pandoc is great but it does not offer Apple’s Pages as a source file format, so we need to use the Microsoft Word format as an interim. Here is what we do once we have Pandoc installed.

Export from pages to Word (make sure to use docx - the default)Locate the file just exported in the finder and change directory to there.

Here is an explanation of this terminal command:

  • first we change into the folder where our Word document has been saved
  • we now use pandoc with these parameters:
    • wrap=none tells pandoc to not wrap the text that it finds. In other words, allow the text to flow except where there are specific paragraph breaks
    • extract-media=images will pull the images out of the Word document and put them into a folder called images. This will be inside a media folder that pandoc creates automatically.
    • then we have the input file followed by the output needed. The .md extension tells pandoc to create a markdown file.

Then we have a markdown file and then all of the images from the Word document, will be put into the images folder (inside a media folder). The images will be renamed image1.png, image2.png etc (if they were originally png files) or image1.jpg if they were originally JPEG files.

The Markdown file

The markdown file will now need some editing. Here is what a portion looks like:

The reason that we are not seeing markdown headings with ## is because our pages document did not have named styles that could be converted. Not perfect, but we know that any span tag like this one is a heading, so we simply use a GREP search and replace like this:

Replaced with ##

We can remove the table of contents.

More GREP search and replace, will then help to build the image links with the correct structure and image location.

The image links have a width and height set, so we can easily replace this too.

Finally, we need to add our ALT tag text for each image.

Pages to InDesign Converter
Hi, everybody. David Dilling from Markzware. In this demonstration, we’re going to show you how we can get an Apple Pages document into InDesign, using PDF as the medium and PDF2DTP as the tool or converter to help make this happen.

Here, on my Mac desktop, you see a folder I have of an Apple Pages document. In there, I have the Pages document itself, which, you see, looks very similar to a PDF in the icon, which I will double-click. See, I don’t have Pages on my machine, but it will open in Apple Preview, and you can see, in this test file, we have added many different features and functions from Pages: pie charts, other sorts of charts, symbols, text, arrows, pretty much you name it. See, here’s some nice… some nice images with text runaround, etc. So, this is how it looks within Pages, more or less.

Words To Pages Converter

Now, many people have asked,
“How can we get Apple Pages into InDesign?”
A Pages to InDesign converter or conversion filter we don’t directly have, however, if you export your Pages file as a PDF, which we can open up here, also in Preview, and what you notice is an interesting little bug.

Clearview 2 1 1. The Pages file previews without the proper shading and without the numbers within the pie chart (no text displaying). Very interesting. So, you see in the PDF the way it really looks within Pages. Okay.

So, keep an eye on some of these things, and we’re going to come back and look at this later. So, how do we get then this Apple Pages PDF into Adobe InDesign?

Well, for that, we’ll need to jump over into InDesign. In this case, I’m using CS6, and up top is a Markzware menu item.

Pages Converter To Pdf

There we can choose PDF2DTP, amongst our other products, and we can choose Convert PDF. So, now we go into the folder, where the files are. You can see the PDF right here, and if we select it and click Open, we’re now able to effectively get this Pages document right into Adobe InDesign via the PDF format and Markzware’s PDF2DTP, a plugin for Adobe InDesign CS5, CS5.5, or CS6, as you’re seeing in this case. Click Open. You could also say Import or Convert. Convert’s better, because we’ll see we’re going to make that PDF. We’re gonna get all the layers, and colors, and font information, and 3D, shaping, and shadowing, all right in.

There, we see it, like a hot knife cutting through soft butter, we convert this file, and there you have it. Apple music program. The file that was just before in Apple Pages, exported to a PDF by a colleague, and now I need it in InDesign. And, with Markzware’s PDF2DTP, that’s all 100% possible.

By the way, there’s a lot of advanced settings that can help make the conversion even more exact. I recommend that you tinker around with these settings in the PDF2DTP preferences, to make sure you get the best data conversion possible.

PDF2DTP will also save to a job folder and extract all images from the file. I’ll show you that in a moment. Alright, so now we see that we get the full conversion, and you’ll see that it looks almost exactly like the original. Software untuk recording.

Now, I say almost, because there are a couple little things, and that is a reality of life. PDF format is very tricky. It’s very chaotic, compared to the native DTP or desktop publishing formats, and, thus, some reworking will be needed. And I’ll show you what those are by opening the…

So, now, I’ll open up the PDF here, on this side, InDesign file, a little bit on this side. Now, what do you see right away? Well, you see right away that it’s not that bad, the first page. We get the image, we get the text running around the image, just like it should, but you see the table, although it converts, and tables are also very tricky.

That’s pretty cool. What you do see is that the stylization of the colorization did not carry over. So, that’s something we’ll need to add back in, in InDesign, a little touch up. Now, I was most impressed with this, with this funky chart here from Pages, that it came right on over into InDesign, perfectly. Very impressed with that.

And you see, it’s just an image that you can move around and replace. You’ll see the two, the text layer and image layer. So, that is pretty darn cool. That’s going to save us a lot of time.

Page 2, you’ll see, is also an excellent conversion via the converter, but I’m highly impressed with this Pages via PDF to InDesign, because it’s really working great.

The shapes also worked perfectly. You see the arrow, the text, the shapes, the arrow with the same text here, arrows with the same text here. Very, very nice. A block of text, and we have here, then, images with text runaround. Perfect! What I want you to notice, because this is very… one of the key things the Markzware engineers spent a lot of time, and when I say a lot of time, we’re talking, well, years to get this text flow exactly the same.

This is not easy to do, getting PDF text into InDesign in exactly the same exact format and spacing and H&Js. Really, that’s really important.

Now, here, we have another table. Games for both mac and pc. The same problem with this table is the coloring disappeared. That said, we get all of the symbols coming right on over. So, this is pretty cool. Once again, extremely useful, and very, very, very impressed with that. Did a little bit of touching up with the colorization there.

Here, we have some images with rotation. See, that comes in, right on over. Fantastic! And, the last page, we have text with an image placed with some nice effects and it all stays.

And look at that, even InDesign preflight says no errors. Now, I’d be more curious what Markzware’s FlightCheck says when we preflight it, but we’ll leave that for another time.

Alright, so that is it, folks. That’s how you get an Apple Pages file right into Adobe InDesign with Markzware’s PDF2DTP, a great way to convert PDF files and native Adobe Illustrator files right into InDesign, available for InDesign and QuarkXPress and available for Mac or Windows.

Apple laptop hd. PDF2DTP is extremely affordable and works fantastic, as you just saw here, and will save you countless hours, and thus money, in recreating desktop publishing layouts, in this case, a Pages file. Windows 10 laptop sleep when lid closed. It could be Corel Draw. It could be Microsoft Word, and via PDF, gets it right back into a desktop publishing environment you’re familiar with, in this case, Adobe InDesign CS6.

One last thing to show you, as I talked about, the job folder. In the job folder, there, you’ll see the two versions of PDF2DTP. I have one for QuarkXPress and one for InDesign. And when I go in the one for InDesign, you’ll see all the jobs I’ve converted over the last couple months here, and, if we search by date, we’ll get this here test folder, that we… that test file we just converted, and you’ll see that we get all the images extracted out and the InDesign file, which we’re working on now.

So, extremely useful. And these, you know, just to show you, you can now open up these. There’s that. There’s that pie chart. Look how beautiful it is. And look how great it converted over.
